Boeing Union Rejects Contract, Authorizes Strike in 2026

Boeing Breaking News: Boeing’s white-collar union has rejected the company’s proposed contracts and overwhelmingly authorized a strike, increasing pressure on the aerospace giant ahead of the October 6 contract expiration deadline.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), IFPTE Local 2001, which represents about 17,000 Boeing engineers, scientists and technical workers, voted against the company’s latest contract proposals. About 92% of eligible union members participated in the vote, while more than 88% supported authorizing a strike, according to the union.

Boeing Workers Reject Proposed Contract – The Professional Unit, representing nearly 13,000 engineers and scientists, rejected its proposed agreement by 64.3% to 35.7%. A total of 7,238 members voted against the contract, while 4,027 voted in favor.

The Technical Unit, which represents more than 4,000 analysts, designers, technicians and other specialists, rejected its proposal by an even wider margin of 71.9% to 28.1%. The vote came despite SPEEA’s negotiation team unanimously recommending the company’s proposals to members.

Boeing Offered 29.4% Pay Increase-Boeing’s proposal included a 29.4% increase in pay over four years, which SPEEA described as the largest wage-pool increase for its members since 1983. The proposed contract also included:

  • Three additional paid leave days every year
  • Lower limits on mandatory overtime
  • More opportunities for remote or virtual work
  • A joint labor-management committee focused on artificial intelligence
  • A multi-year wage increase package

Despite these proposed benefits, union members rejected the overall contracts.

Why Did Boeing Workers Reject the Deal? SPEEA indicated that deep mistrust of Boeing management played an important role in the membership vote. The rejection highlights the gap between the union’s negotiating team and the broader membership. While negotiators endorsed the proposed agreements, members ultimately voted against them. SPEEA said it plans to survey members to determine what changes would be necessary for a contract to receive approval.

Boeing Strike Could Happen After October 6-Boeing’s current SPEEA contracts are scheduled to expire on October 6, 2026. However, the strike authorization does not mean that a strike will automatically begin on October 6. SPEEA said negotiations will continue and that an agreement could still be reached before the contracts expire.

The union’s negotiators said they are prepared to resume discussions with Boeing while also having the authority to call a labor stoppage if necessary. For Boeing, the development adds another labor-relations challenge as the company works to maintain production, engineering operations and workforce stability.

What Happens Next? SPEEA plans to gather additional feedback from its members and return to negotiations with Boeing. If the two sides reach an agreement before the current contracts expire, a strike could be avoided. If negotiations fail and the union determines that a work stoppage is necessary, the strike authorization gives SPEEA the ability to move toward that option. Boeing has been contacted for comment regarding the union vote.
