Lawyer creates ruckus during Supreme Court hearing, uses abusive language against CJI, and is thrown out of court
Supreme Court Breaking News, New Delhi: An unprecedented incident unfolded during a hearing in the country’s Supreme Court on Friday. A lawyer appearing before a Supreme Court bench allegedly behaved indecently during the proceedings, throwing a file, and using abusive language against the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The CJI was not present in the courtroom at the time of the incident.
The incident occurred before a bench of Justice KV Vishwanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe. Following the court’s direction, security personnel immediately removed the lawyer from the courtroom as the disturbance escalated. Later, the Delhi Police took him away for questioning.
Who is the lawyer causing the disturbance? According to media reports, the lawyer who caused the disturbance has been identified as Prabal Pratap. He had approached the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court. His petition challenged the order that treated his application as a private complaint instead of conducting a police investigation.
What happened during the hearing? As the hearing began, the court asked the lawyer if he would represent himself. The lawyer reportedly asked the court to order the registration of an FIR against the Lucknow ACP.
Justice KV Vishwanathan expressed surprise and asked if he was giving the court orders. The lawyer then stated that everything on his behalf was on record and then threw his case file into the air. He also allegedly used abusive language, which briefly created a tense atmosphere in the courtroom.
Security personnel immediately controlled the situation. Following the commotion, the Supreme Court security team took immediate action and removed the lawyer from the courtroom. According to eyewitnesses, the file throwing made many people in the courtroom uneasy, and proceedings were briefly disrupted.
Justice KV Vishwanathan’s reaction Justice KV Vishwanathan responded with restraint, stating that the person in question appeared to be very upset and frustrated. He stated that the court sympathizes with him and does not deem it necessary to take separate action against him at this time.
However, the court also clarified that in the present case, no solid legal basis was found to interfere with the Allahabad High Court’s order, and therefore, relief cannot be granted on the petition.
The Bar Council Can Take Action Even though the Supreme Court did not take any immediate punitive action, the Bar Council can investigate the conduct of the lawyer concerned.
Under the Advocates Act, 1961, if an advocate is found to be guilty of violating professional conduct, the disciplinary committee can take the following actions:
Issuing a warning.
- Suspending from practicing law for a specified period.
- In serious cases, removing the name from the Bar Council’s list.
- Previous Incidents of Indecency in the Supreme Court
Such incidents are considered extremely rare in the Supreme Court. There have been some instances in the past where attempts were made to undermine the dignity of the court.
1999: A shoe-throwing incident occurred in the court of then-CJI A.S. Anand. The Supreme Court, considering it a serious criminal contempt, sentenced the lawyer to four months’ imprisonment and a fine.
2025: A shoe-throwing incident also occurred in the court of then-CJI B.R. Gavai. Security personnel immediately detained the accused, and disciplinary action was subsequently initiated at the Bar Council level.
Maintaining the Dignity of the Judiciary is Essential The Supreme Court of India is the most important institution in the judicial system. All parties in the court are expected to respect the judicial process and the dignity of the court. Any indecent behavior not only impacts judicial proceedings but can also impact public confidence in the rule of law.

Further legal and disciplinary action in this matter will depend on the decision of the relevant agencies and the Bar Council.
